At 8:45 pm the lights went out and everybody started screaming, but we should have remained sited, I have never ever seen a good opening act and I don’t know if I will ever live to see one. Out came this girl (Teri Gender Bender) dressed in a dolly outfit and a mask so bizarre that not even Peter Gabriel would wear it! It was local band the Butcherettes. Maybe I was just too dumb to understand if there was any irony implied, but what can you interpret from a girl running around bear feet balancing a broom, yes a broom, in her mouth?
By 9:45 and after having to sit through such a strange episode the crow was getting a little edgy. We all had a date with night and she was nowhere to be seen. But Finally at 10 after one and a half hours of waiting the lights went out again, I guess that when you are a bigger than life rock star you can afford to be that fashionably late.
Karen O came out looking amazing in one of her signatures outfits and as soon as the first cords of runaway started echoing (bouncing would be a more fitting word cause unfortunately the venue wasn’t the best for having a clean sound ) all was right with the world again.
The Blood in the auditorium really started pumping by their third song, the super hit “heads will role” for which Karen O wore the coolest orange neon mask, as she danced hyperactively trough the stage. From here on the band took us on an elevating spiral that kept getting bigger , better and brighter ! (Karen’s wardrobe rocked).
For me the catharsis arrived with their beautiful interpretation of “hysteric” followed soon after by “y control” my favorite yeah yeah yeahs song ever! but this was all in just a warm up for what came next, when in the middle of “cheated hearts” Karen O descended from the stage into the crowd and shared her microphone with the people at the front ! Those lucky bastards!
This, Karen told us, was to be their last gig in a very very long time, and it showed. She smiled the whole concert, and they seamed to be having a really good time which made the audience feel really in tune with the bad . The lovely spaghetti figure of Nick Zinner, keep taking pictures of the audience, as it is characteristic of him, a gesture that I found most endearing! , even the set list was pleasing to all, it included all their hits but also little treats for the hard core fans, like their ancient “miles away”.
The time arrived for the date to end, and it was a sweet goodbye too with a lovely acoustic version of the yeah yeah yeahs love song “maps” and an amazingly powerful performance of “ date with the night” which ended with Miss O using her microphone as whip and lashing it against the floor. Brilliant absolutely brilliant.
The last person off the stage was drummer Brian Chase who gave a long and grateful reverence. All in all a great concert.
dedicated to Captain Nelson !
